  • What is the Safer Bars curriculum? Safer Bars is an evidence-based curriculum designed to train bar staff to recognize and respond to sexual aggression. This curriculum was developed by the Arizona Department of Health in collaboration with bar owners, staff, and patrons. This curriculum has been adapted for New York bars and all of our trainings will be customized to fit your staff, your business, and your culture. We won’t tell your staff what to do; rather, we build on their skills to create a safer and more welcoming establishment.

  • How much does this program cost? Our training program is free.

  • When is the training offered? When it’s convenient for you. The training is held in two, 2.5 hours sessions held between two and six weeks apart. Trainings can be held on weekends, after hours, or at any time that will be easiest for you and your staff.

  • Where is the training held? We’ll come to you. We are happy to hold training sessions in your establishment or in any other location that will be convenient for you and your staff.

  • Why should my bar participate?
    Promotion: We will promote establishments that participate in safer bars throughout the community and on college campuses, online and through the media. You will also be provided with a window decal to enhance your bar’s image and to designate you as a safer bars member.
    Customer + Staff Satisfaction: Participation in our program will show your customers and staff your commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment.
    Staff Preparedness: Through our bar staff training program, your staff will have a greater range of strategies to use in addressing unwanted sexual aggression that is directed at themselves or at patrons. With staff more able to recognize and address problems early, aggression can be stopped before getting to the point where you need to file an incident report or call the police.
    A Better Bottom Line: Customers who have positive experiences are more likely to return and to tell their friends! Bars who have used this program in other locations have seen an increase in patronage and positive reviews.

  • What are the requirements to be designated as a member of safer bars? To be designated as a safer bar, 70% or more of all bar staff must attend and complete the training curriculum. All bars must post materials in the bar identifying yourself as a program participant, including posters to notify customers that they can reach out to staff for help. We ask that all bars participate in one community activity per year, such as hosting a safe bar night or attending, sponsoring or promoting another community event.
